Solar Electric Catamaran
The all aluminum Solar Freedom 44 is a recent (2022) custom design by Rick Welin. Commissioned by a Toronto client seeking to push the envelope in the electric boat domain she’s 44′ [13m] LOA with a 23′-2″ [7.06m] beam. Powered by two 50 kW electric motors she’s expected to cruise at 6 knots on battery, and have an unlimited range at 4-5 knots directly off the solar panels on a sunny day. Power is provided by 100-150 kW LifePO4 battery bank charged by the 24 solar panel (8kW) array which is backed up by a 50-100kW genset for cloudy days. She can run continuously regardless of weather. Quick charging can also be achieved at the dock with shore power.
The hulls were designed from scratch for electric power, not re-purposed sail or power-cat hulls like many others in the solar boat category. Her long and slender hulls, and fine entry at the forefoot ensure minimal drag resistance and can be driven on a whisper.
Moving forward it’s our intention to focus more on the electric and solar power segment so if you have an electric boat project that you’d wish to discuss please contact us for more information.
