Designed by Rick Welin ( metalboatkits.com ) this welded aluminum skiff will take a beating and last a lifetime.

A dingy or yacht tender leads a rough life , being dragged up on many a rocky shoreline or bashing against encrusted piers. . Inflatable and fiberglass boats just don't stand up over the long term. This skiff was designed out of frustration with existing products on the market.... Most are simply too "tender" or are too delicate for actual everyday usage. This one provides a safe dry ride and load carrying for the real world. Designed by a boater , for boaters.

Built with 1/8" aluminum plating  and all welded seams. She is extra beamy for load carrying. A moderate VEE bottom ensures strength as well as a comfortable ride. She has as a 2" pipe rubrail for hand holds and super strength. The "scuppers" all around under the rub-rails afford plenty of places for tying lines or attaching canvas for cushioning bumpers while along side the mother ship. Plenty of room for cargo and people. Foam Filled Floatation compartments ensure level floatation when swamped. (Customer supplies pour in place foam. )

    I built this boat in 2008/09 as a first welding and first boat building project. I built it according to plans with the following changes: I added drain holes through the bench seats, added downrigger brackets for fishing, added a 1″ drain plug and doubled the thickness of the transom/engine mount plate. I powered it with a 40hp 4 stroke tiller and, with the current prop, it does 36mph on a light load. I reach the rev limiter before I run out of fuel flow, indicating I could put a more aggressive prop on it and go faster. I don’t want to do that because I am often using this boat to haul gear to a remote property. This boat helped a friend build his cabin and he affectionately calls it “the mule”. I wouldn’t be able to estimate how much weight I’ve put in this boat hauling sacks of concrete, sheets of plywood, pressure treated lumber, and beer. I’ve taken this boat out on solo winter hunts and on one occasion found myself in 5 foot seas, which was past my personal comfort zone, but not the boat’s. I confidently put my family in this boat and run in seas up to 3 feet. On three occasions I’ve run up to 70 miles in a day (round trip) for fishing, running nearly full out both ways, with a partner and gear and over 150 additional pounds of fish on return, and consumed about 5 gallons of gas.

    I receive lots of comments on this vessel, including that it’s the perfect boat for around here (southeast Alaska) and many people are amazed that I put it together myself as a first welding and boat building project. It’s a seaworthy craft and it’s stability inspires confidence. The ~10 degree (I think) vee bottom provides excellent stability and chop cutting, and, when on plane it rides high enough out of the water it could be converted to a jet. I’m guessing it would draft 6-8″ as a jet. I can pull loaded 36″ welded dungeness crab pots with two adults on one side of the boat and not worry about stability. At times I’ve thought about adding a center console and windscreen, but that would prohibit me from hauling full sheets of plywood.

    Overall I wholeheartedly recommend this boat if what I’ve described is something that you’re looking for. Running in an open skiff does get cold and wet, and yet, I’m still smiling.
